Dead By Zombie: Opening Quotes

I have a computer game for sale called Dead By Zombie. It is set in a world experiencing a zombie apocalypse. Or so it seems. And features several key NPC's (Non-Player Characters) involved in the story. Two of the biggest are two guys named Hexenhammer and Venturius. Roughly speaking, a villain and a hero. Well, somewhat of a villian. And a hero... well, only sometimes. When the game begins you see an opening splash screen which gives a slice of the game experience by showing a few quotes from these guys. It also gives a taste of their personalities, and their role in the game.

Enough talk. Here they go:

"Tonight we cross the final barrier in Man's exploration of Nature and her Laws.
Tonight the dead will rise."
Dr. Heinrich von Hexenhammer

"Good Heavens, Synthia!
If your skirt lifts up any higher I will be quite unable to do any more Science this evening!"
Victor Venturius

Earth vs. Space Monster Zygan

Once upon a time there was a giant space monster who was hungry and decided that the planet Earth would make a good meal.

Little did the monster know, however, that Earth was not as easy of prey as it initially appeared. A young warrior named Hiro, floating in Earth orbit, was using his spacesuit's sensor and video feed system to watch the monster as he entered the Sol system. With this battle-equipped suit and his own talent, training and tactical wizardry, he was confident he could stop the monster from devouring the Earth.

"This is Red 9 to Command. Come in, Command," said Hiro into his wristcom.

A few seconds passed in silence. Then suddenly--

"Yes, Hiro," said a staticy voice from his earpiece. "This is Command. Go ahead."

"I've spotted the creature on my long-range scanners," reported Hiro. "In a minute I'll proceed to the planned ambush point. He won't get by me."

"Don't get too cocky, kid. The suit doesn't make you invulnerable. Harder to kill, but not impossible. Be careful."

"I know. Sheesh. Can't a guy strut his stuff a little?"

Annoyed, Hiro flicked off the wristcom, ending the conversation.

He was sure he would be scolded later for it. But now, he had work to do. He had to save the planet Earth.

Activating his impulse jets, he accelerated toward the asteroid belt. His hiding place was already picked out. The creature would not know he was there until it was too late.

Or so he hoped.

Go to the Planet Arcturus...

Susan Meerson was speaking to Dr. Victor Venturius one day in his laboratory when he suddenly asked her to do something for him, something very important and urgent...
"Go to the planet Arcturus. The city called Wayland. Enter the bar called Tony's and ask to speak to Bob, who runs the place. Old Bob and me we go way back, I mean way back, all the way to the Rebellion."
"You were in the Rebellion?" asked Susan.
"No. But I watched it on holovid. Like your father. And Bob."
"You knew my father?"
"Yes. And he also was a great fan of the Rebellion. On the holovid."
"My father watched the Rebellion on holovid?"
"Yes, and he was very good at it. The best I've ever known. Just as you will be one day, if you keep at it."
"Oh I don't know about that..."
"That's your Uncle Dan talking."
"I don't have an Uncle Dan."
"Oh."

Susan Sees Galaxy G (part 2)

Susan hurtled down a vortex in space-time at something improbably close to the speed of light. It wasn't often that she got to hurtle, so she was making quite a show of it. She yelled a lot. Waved her arms frantically. None of it seemed to work. She kept right on hurtling.

As she hurtled along the vortex, which was mostly a black tunnel, she sometimes made out little specks of light. She though they might be stars. She looked closer at one and realized it wasn't a star it was a galaxy, an entire galaxy. All these galaxies were hurtling along with her, except in the opposite direction. She spotted a shape which turned out to be a sort of starship upon closer inspection. A long purple starship, with neon green glowing windows, and lots of chrome pipes. Pipes on a starship! They must have been purely for effect, she thought. The starship hurtled past her too.

Susan Sees Galaxy G

Susan sat and sat and thought about just exactly where she was at. She was at work in her cubicle on level forty-one of the corporate headquarters offices of OOBMSDP, a rather gigantic and ambiguous business that covered most of three planets, and even then, it was a tight fit.

She wondered what she was doing there. Not in a tactical sense: she knew she was there to A the B, and X the Y. (There was usually more X than A, which was an unfortunate but inescapable quality of working for OOBMSDP.) But in the strategic sense: why was she REALLY there? Was it because of the money? Or because she loved it? She certainly didn't love it. Hated it, actually. So it must have been the money. But there were other ways of making money. Like prostitution, for example. Or becoming a lawyer. Or a sewage treatment plant operator. Those were the probable alternatives she was faced with, and therefore, her present means of employment were clearly the wiser choice.

Her full name was Susan Meerson but Meerson was often misspelled so she was sometimes Susan Merson or Susan Myerson or Meeson and once she was even Susan Miller, as hard to believe as it seems. But she was never really ANY of these things because these things were only names or words, and they weren't even ones that she chose. Much like her job at the OOBMSDP, it just sort of happened one day, it stuck, and lasted ever since.

As she was thinking these thoughts, a rift in space-time opened in the space just outside her cubicle. It was round and black, and little purple sparks were emitted around the edges of the blackness. It floated in the air about a foot off the ground, and was about 4 feet across in diameter. It made a quiet sound like static noise. Susan didn't realize it immediately but she was looking at a portal to another world, an alternate dimension perhaps, or another part of the universe, perhaps a wormhole to a distant galaxy. She got up when she saw it, at first in fright, but then in curiosity. Long story short, she decided to touch the portal. Nothing happened. She stuck a foot in it, nothing happened, didn't feel anything, though she couldn't see her foot once it was in it. She stepped all the way into it, leaving her cubicle behind entirely, and disappeared. A second later, the black disk shrunk down to a speck, then disappeared.

Once her manager discovered she was missing, he simply started routing the paperwork flow around her office, diverting it to various other people and places in the vast bureaucratic machine. The OOBMSDP carried on as it was, as it was designed to, and as it would ever be, forever and ever, amen. And nobody noticed. At least, nobody noticed until the large well-armed starship entered orbit and demanded that they all stop what they were doing immediately or face annihilation. Oh they noticed then. But that won't happen til a bit later in the story, and we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. First, we need to continue on with Susan, find out what happened to her when she stepped through the portal and disappeared. If you're patient, you can be assured that all of your questions will eventually be answered. Some by a nice man in a three-piece suit and a charming British accent. If you're not patient, well then you can close this book right now and carry on with your job at the OOBMSDP. Oh don't deny it. I know you work there too. But anyway... on with our story and with what happened to Susan Meerson, often misspelled...

It's Alive!

FADE IN:

INT. A HOUSE - LIVINGROOM - DAY

An empty livingroom. A TV, a table and chairs, and a couch,
all sitting alone and forlorn and very unused-like.
Something about the couch is not quite right. One of the
seat cushions moves a little bit.

Suddenly, a HAND appears, emerging from beneath the cushion.

A hand. A hand, and a wrist. And some fingers. Some
fingers, a hand and a wrist, all attached together. A very
strange sight indeed.

And ... it's ALIVE!

It's alive and it grabs the cushion imprisoning it. It grabs
it from the side and pushes it up off of the couch. Followed
shortly thereafter by MARY. Thirty-ish and slim, she wears
an odd smile and some kind of all-white jumpsuit-type outfit.
She gets up out of the couch. Stands beside it. Replaces the
cushion and preens the couch back into its former state.

MARY
That was a ... really strange dream.

Nemo Attacks

Captain Nemo began implementing his plan of attack. Every crewman on the Nautilus went to their battle stations. The submarine descended into the trench. Turned off it's exterior lights. Went silent. Stayed perfectly still. It lay that way for hours and hours.
The enemy ship approached without suspecting it was travelling into a trap.
The Nautilus lit up both forward torpedo banks, unloading a total of six proton warheads at short range. The enemy had no time to react. The torpedoes all hit and detonated and in an instant the front of the ship simply ceased to exist. It collapsed into itself in a cloud of bubbles and debris.
Nemo was on the bridge surveying the results. "One down," he said to himself quietly.
